Artist Spotlight: Curzøn

In our Artist Spotlight series we have a chance to talk with artists about their inspirations and favorite part of being an artist. This month we spoke with indie hip-hop artist, Curzøn.

Artist and producer, Curzøn, hails from Brooklyn, New York. At 13 years old, Curzøn found his passion for making music and began studying arts. He now has experience in writing, performing, engineering and producing. The young artist has even worked alongside top producers including Koby Hass. The multi-talented rapper gains inspiration from Biggie, Kanye and Jay-Z, creating music that is "vibrant for soul, conscious for the mind and rhythmic for the body."

Who Am I

Curzøn X

F: Who are your biggest musical influences?

C: I'd have to say my biggest influences come from artists like 2Pac, Biggie, Eminem, Nas, Jay-Z and Kanye; Dudes that can tell a good story and gather crowds from hundreds of thousands to recite every word. I grew up listening to these guys. They made hip-hop a challenge. I believe that this culture thrives off of competition.

F: What has been your biggest success/challenge in your musical career?

C: My biggest success/challenge was putting together my first mixtape "Up 2 Here". Self-producing is way harder than it looks, especially when you're working on a full project. Though the mixtape could've been better, I feel it stands aa a symbol of my growth as an artist and as a person.

F: What artists/music are you currently listening to?

C: I don't listen to other artists too frequently, but when I do, I'd say Biggie, Pac, Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye, Fabolous, J. Cole and Drake.

F: What is your most memorable moment from a tour or show?

C: My most memorable moment would be when I performed for CMJ at SweetSounds Studio. It was my first time having my mother and brothers see me perform, and I got some really good feedback from everyone that night.

F: What advice would you give to other artists?

C: If music really is your true love, then let your passion and ambition steer the wheel. The best music comes from the heart and you have to believe in yourself before anyone else can believe in you. Also, don't get discouraged from another one's shine. Envy is your number one enemy, know your worth and apply yourself.
